Inlays and Onlays

If you have damaged or decayed teeth, dental inlays or onlays may be ideal for you.
Dentists recommend porcelain restorations when a filling cannot sufficiently restore a tooth, but a crown would be excessive.
Dr. John P. Goodman provides custom inlays and onlays in Kansas City, MO, designed to achieve a precise fit and natural-looking aesthetics.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Dental inlay, onlay, and crown models

Also referred to as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays offer a well-fitting, long-lasting reparative solution to tooth decay or similar structural damage.

They are often used in place of traditional dental fillings. Whereas fillings are molded into place during a visit to our Kansas City dentist, inlays and onlays are fabricated before being fitted and bonded. In some cases, they are a more conservative alternative to full-coverage dental crowns.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays From a Trusted Kansas City Dentist

Inlays and onlays offer an array of aesthetic and functional benefits, including:

Preservation

Inlays and onlays require minimal removal of the natural tooth since they bond directly to it.

Durability

As a result of the materials used, inlays and onlays may last over ten years with proper care.

Appearance

Tooth-colored inlays and onlays match the appearance of surrounding teeth and maintain their color.

Dr. Goodman and his staff were honestly incredible. I’ve never been to a dentist that’s taken his time to talk me through recommendations, and had the best interest of the client in mind. I would absolutely recommend him! Probably the best dental experience I’ve ever had.

A Look at the Procedure Step-By-Step Breakdown

Typically, two dentist appointments at our Kansas City practice are needed for the procedure.
Typically, two dentist appointments at our Kansas City practice are needed for the procedure.
During the first visit, Dr. Goodman will remove decay from the affected tooth and prepare it for the restoration.
An impression of the tooth and opposing teeth is sent to a dental laboratory where your inlay or onlay will be fabricated.
Dr. Goodman will place a temporary inlay or onlay over the affected tooth while your inlay or onlay is being fabricated.
During your second visit, he will remove the temporary solution and place the permanent restoration with a strong dental bonding material.
Once it is securely attached, Dr. Goodman will finish by sculpting the tooth to ensure an optimal bite.

What’s the Difference
Between Direct and Indirect Restorations?

Although both types of dentistry procedures restore the look and function of an affected tooth, they do so in varying ways.

Direct Restorations

Direct restorations can be fabricated and complete inside the mouth without the need to send anything to a dental laboratory. The most common direct restoration used are dental fillings made from silver amalgam or composite resin.

Indirect Restorations

Indirect restorations must be fabricated outside the mouth before being placed on the affected tooth. Inlays and onlays fall into this category, as to dental crowns and bridges.

The type of restoration that is best for you depends on a number of factors such as the type, extent, and location of damage or decay. We’ve helped many patients just like you in Kansas City determine the right restoration solution for them.

How Much Do Inlays and Onlays Cost?

The cost of dental inlays and onlays depends on a variety of factors, including the teeth being worked on, the type of material used, and the scope of the restoration at large. Fortunately, inlays and onlays are covered by many insurance providers. Our practice in Kansas City, MO, accepts most insurance and offers CareCredit® financing to help patients afford treatment.
